The Intersection of Quality and Commonsense
This article describes a successful reconstruction and expansion project for an intersection in Indiana. Intersections present special challenges for contractors, since the work has to be done in stages to avoid closing the roads. In this project, the job was divided into four phases, each encompassing an area of the intersection, to ease management and streamline operations. One of the biggest decisions made in the project was to delay repair of the intersection for a year, until after all the utilities were in place. This prevented construction delays and ensured that the new paving did not have to be cut and patched. Careful planning and scheduling were also critical in the expansion part of the project to ensure a smooth pavement throughout the intersection, including the new lanes.
