The Citytunnel Project of Malmo: a Complex Railway Project Boosting Integration and Growth in the Skoene and Oeresund Regions of Sweden
The article describes the Citytunnnel project of Malmo, Sweden, that involves the construction of 1) an 11 km double track line between Malmo Central Station and the Oeresund Line, of which 6 km are underground and 5 km above ground; 2) and a 6 km single track rail link between the Oeresund Line and the existing lines towards Trelleborg and Ystad. Once the Citytunnel is completed in 2011, the new rail link will: contribute to improved integration in the Oeresund region; boost development in the various parts of the Skone region; increase the role of the Malmo City Center as a focal point in the region; bring together the railway systems in southern Sweden and increase the capacity for railway traffic in the future; and contribute to an environmentally sound transport system. .
