Developing the Driving Anger Scale

Incidents of road rage and angry drivers are becoming quite common in media reports and in traffic safety research. This paper reviews the development of the driving anger scale (DAS) which was developed in the United States in mid 1990s. Although road rage does not appear to be a problem in New Zealand, very little is known about the factors that cause drivers to become angry. Therefore, this research investigated how much of a problem driver anger is in New Zealand and the situations which cause New Zealand drivers to experience anger. The factor structure of the DAS was also investigated, in order to develop an appropriate set of items for a New Zealand version of the scale. The data were also tested for relationship between driver anger, demographics, and descriptive variables.
