Rail Benefits from Aviation Techniques

Australian rolling stock company EDI Rail designed and built a fleet of 35 for-car double deck emus, known as the Millennium Train, for use around Sydney. Two years after the train's introduction, reliability has been declared good, credited by EDI Rail to a new approach to maintenance. EDI Rail used a reliability centered maintenance (RCM) methodology to identify how trains were likely to fail, and how best to prevent this. The process started with a failure mode and effects analysis which identified 4000 system failure modes to the millennium Train; engineering, reliability and maintenance teams then worked together to identify both the failure modes and their consequences. The RCM concept has its genesis in the aviation industry, but there is a strong role for it in the rail industry, especially with the growing trend towards performance based maintenance contracts.
