BUS PRIORITY AT ISOLATED TRAFFIC SIGNALS AND IN TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEMS

The traffic authority of New South Wales has been engaged in a project assisted by the Australian government under the Transport (Planning and Research) Act, 1974, to investigate the feasibility of implementing bus priority techniques at traffic signal locations. The broad objectives of the project were to determine appropriate strategies to be used at signalized intersections for giving priority to buses in order to reduce the delays experienced by these vehicles. The effect of these strategies on other road users was also investigated. The approach adopted was to develop control systems and test these with carefully designed field experiments. This report describes the strategies developed and the experiments carried out to test them. Also described in this report is a computer program developed to simulate bus priority strategies.
