A Scenario Aggregation-Based Approach for Determining a Robust Airline Fleet Composition for Dynamic Capacity Allocation
This paper presents background research connected with the dynamic capacity management (DCM ) concept. It devises an approach to the airline fleet composition problem that accounts explicitly for stochastic demand fluctuations. The modeling seeks a fleet composition that supports dynamic allocation, depending on the flight schedule under consideration and the associated stochastic demands on its flight legs. The approach supports strategic fleet planning in a model based way that can be applied to various networks. The paper advocates proactive decision making at the strategic level, which better enables more flexible operational aircraft capacity deployment. The paper documents the idea that an appropriate strategic support tool should incorporate explicit means for determining a fleet composition flexible enough for the successful implementation of the dynamic allocation concept.
