Ivan the Terrible: Lessons in Disaster
In the span of a few days last fall, the Pensacola Regional Airport, a medium hub airport, was transformed into a pre-storm evacuation center, suffered a direct hit from a violent hurricane and immediately re-opened as the staging area for an entire city's relief efforts. Nearly a year later, the airport is back in business, but hardly back to normal. During last year, a case study in disaster management was created , leaving behind an eight point "Pensacola's Post-Ivan Lessons Learned " list that should benefit both Pensacola officials and the airport community as a whole. These are the eight points: 1) have a plan, revise it and review it with tenants regularly; 2) expect the unexpected (the rental car return crush, evacuation); 3) manage staffing; 4) evacuate all structures, not just the terminal; 5) coordinate resources in advance and establish key points of contact outside your geographical area; 6) have satellite phones or alternate means of communication; 7) keep track of all personnel, costs, vehicles, materials and equipment; 8) arrange with local businesses to have basic supplies on hand for quicker access when they are needed.
