MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SOILS FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION

MEKHANICHESKIE SVOJSTVA GRUNTOV V DROZHNOM STROITEL'STVE

The author studies the mechanical properties of soils found either under a pavement or directly in contact with the wheels of a vehicle. He describes the test methods, in the laboratory or on site, giving the characteristics necessary for either the design of pavements or understanding the soil-wheel interaction. He proposes a calculation method for pavements on a soil obeying a non linear deformation law. He describes some penetrometer studies and shows that their results are related to those obtained by classic loading tests. He gives structural and mechanical characteristics of loose soils infrequently studied and indicates how these can be taken into account for the design and construction of pavements. He mentions new study methods for the structural and mechanical characteristics of soils, using photographic, microscopic and radiometric techniques. /TRRL/
