Development Strategy of Railway Traffic Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia

In this article, the authors propose a restructuring of the railways in Croatia and the European Union (EU), with the aim of achieving better interdependence. As Croatia undertakes railway traffic infrastructure development, this goal of interdependence must be kept in mind. The authors first describe the parallel development of the three networks that form the EU railways system, together with their characteristics and anticipated future roles. These three networks are the network of the Trans-European conventional railway line system; the high-speed railway line network (HS Net); and the network of railway lines intended primarily for cargo transport (RTEFF, TEFFN). The authors then provide an overview of the conditions of the Croatian railway lines and the necessary changes and improvements that will prepare them for the integration in the EU traffic system. The authors conclude by calling for additional investments into the railways in Croatia, in order to achieve the integration into the EU traffic routes as quickly as possible. The favorable geographic position of Croatia in terms of traffic flow will only prove advantageous if the quality of traffic routes is raised to the appropriate levels. In turn, good traffic routes mean a lot for the development of other branches of the economy.
