BART DEMONSTRATION REPORT
The basic train control, train protection, and wayside line supervision systems described in the GRS concept of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System are realistic Signals can be transmitted through the rails from the wayside-to-car over the following distances: 1 kc/s-4600 feet; 2 kc/s-4500 feet; and 5 kc/s-2100 feet. The use of audio frequency signaling through the rails is compatible with the various rail mountings installed on the test track. Neither the d-c or a-c propulsion systems interfere with the reception of track signals. The various signals employed by the GRS system produce no electromagnetic interference with other services. Safety of the GRS system is in all respects compatible with accepted signal practice. Stopping accuracy of plus or minus 1 foot can be a practical achievement provided that the performance of the brake system is dependable and reliable. Automatic control at constant speed can readily operate within tolerances of plus or minus 2 mph. The fixed block system provides a high degree of inherent damping.
