User-Equilibrium Route Set Analysis of a Large Road Network
The exploratory research in this paper has addressed the question of the characteristics of route sets in the solution to an integrated user-equilibrium mode for the first time. Using graphical methods, the paper has displayed the relation of origin-destination (OD) pairs and total routes in terms of generalized cost, OD flow and direction of travel, as well as the more aggregate relationships. The authors find the results surprising with respect to the broad range of values over which the classes of routes occur, and stimulating for gaining an improved understanding of the user-equilibrium model’s properties.
