Versatile Commercial-Class Pavers Offer Contractors Flexibility in the Field

This article provides an overview of the features and capabilities of compact commercial-class pavers. Commercial-class pavers differ from larger mainline-class pavers in design, capabilities and quality expectations. Commercial pavers can be classified as gravity-fed or conveyor-fed depending on how they deliver asphalt from the hopper to the screed. Gravity-fed units are less expensive, but are not considered high-capacity or high-production machines. Conveyor-fed pavers are more expensive, but can handle a wide variety of applications and produce high-quality results. The conveyor-fed pavers are appropriate for paving large parking lots, city streets, rural roads and secondary highway applications. Although commercial pavers are available in either track-driven or wheel-driven versions, a large majority are track-driven due to the better traction. Contractors must also consider screed options, durability, cost of transporting the paver, and manual versus electronic control when choosing a commercial-grade paver.
