Path Size and Overlap in Multi-modal Transport Networks
This paper explores the way overlap is accounted for in route choice modeling, and it focuses on Path Size- Logit and multi-modal route choice. Different approaches accounting for overlap are discussed that show similarities and differences. The analysis of Path Size Logit showed that its interpretation needs to be revised. A distinction should be made between the basic Path Size Logit that ca be seen as approximation of the error convariance matrix, and the Extended Path Size Logit, which introduces a new decision mechanism in choice models. In the Extended Path Size Logit a Size Assignment Parameter (SAP) is introduced that in case of overlapping routes penalizes longer routes and favors shorter ones. In case of multi-modal route choice (Extended) Path Size factors can be expressed in different ways, such as distance in time, but also in number of legs where a log is determined by beginning and end node and the modes or transport services used. The latter definition proved to be most suitable for multi-modal route choice modeling. The inclusion of (Extended) Path Size factors in the choice model improves the performance of the choice models. However, in case of the basic Path Size factor the impact is limited to 0.5% improvement of the log likelihood at most. For the Extended Path Size factor the improvement is substantially larger: 2.0% up to 4.3%. In case of multi-modal route choice an optimal value for the Size Assignment Parameter could be established.
