Fixing Faults with Fasteners
Some of the qualities that railroads of all types look for in a fastener include: noise and vibration attenuation, gauge holding capability, ease of installation and maintenance, and long life cycle. The fastener technology has progressed to meet the requirements of a wide range of guideway designs, from concrete ties on a heavy haul freight railroad to direct fixation track on a rapid transit system. This article looks at some examples of the variety the fastener suppliers are offering to railroads and transit agencies to solve specific engineering and operational problems. These include: Pandrol's direct fixation Panguard system that was tested by the Delaware River Port Authority for use on its PATCO High Speed Line; Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's installation of several hundred Egg Fasteners on portions of the light rail North Station Green Line Relocation Project that will go into service in October; and Union Pacific's use of AirBoss elastic fasteners in several applications across its 33,000 mile system.
