Strelasund Strands: New Cable-Stayed Bridge in Germany
The Second Strelasund Crossing to the Isle of Rygen is currently Germany's largest bridge building project whose construction work started last year. More than two thirds of the 4,097 m long crossing will be on bridges, including a 600 m long cable stayed bridge. Installation of the stay cables on this large project is due to start this fall. This will be the first bridge project in Germany that will use stay cables formed of individual strands. Strand cables were chosen for the project for several reasons - cost, durability and ease of construction, as well as the requirement of a minimum cable diameter of 120 mm.
