High Fibre Diet: Latest Strengthening Technologies
The article examines the combination of a variety of methods and techniques fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) offer for strengthening bridges. These materials have been used in the construction industry for more than 15 years, but the uses to which the FRPs can be put are still being developed , with new techniques in stressing, bonding and anchoring allowing more applications than ever before. Besides the classical fields of strengthening, there are now more diverse applications opening up for FRP materials. One of these is blast mitigation, such as holding together structures exposed to increased explosion risks. Another application is impact protection, where they can increase the ductility of slender columns and piers of highway crossing bridges against collision from vehicles.
