CBTC: Bombardier CITYFLO Solutions
Bombardier Transportation has emerged as one of the leading suppliers of Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) systems. With the range of Bombardier* CITYFLO* products, Bombardier has the technology to address all mass transit requirements for rail control. The CITYFLO solutions have been implemented around the world and offer reliable, state-of-the-art technologies that provide increased efficiency and performance. Among the CITYFLO products, the CBTC solutions CITYFLO 450/650 are emerging as the leading technologies, which recently have been selected as the preferred train control in major systems such as the Neihu Rapid Transit system in Taiwan, the Yong-In Advanced Rapid Transit system in South Korea and Madrid Metro Lines 1 and 6 in Spain. This paper provides an overview of the CITYFLO product line, with specific focus on the CITYFLO 450/650 CBTC systems and their special features that make these solutions first in their class. The paper also discusses the methodology used to satisfy the overlay approach where the operator demands the implementation of a CBTC system, on an existing operational or “brownfield” system, without affecting existing operations. Additional information is provided on the special implementation of CITYFLO 450/650 in a mixed mode operation where customers demand that the newly equipped trains have the capability to operate simultaneously with non-equipped trains. The Madrid Lines 1 and 6 projects are specific examples of the approach used to achieve such challenging requirements. In conclusion, the paper provides an overview of the future of CBTC in the mass transit market and the specific requirements for interoperability that make the CITYFLO system the ideal train control solution.
