Occupational Vehicular Accident Claims: A Workers' Compensation Analysis of Oregon Truck Drivers 1990-1997
Occupational vehicular accidents involving truck drivers represent a serious threat to both work safety and public health. Research has identified truck driving among the most risky occupations for fatal injuries. Workers' compensation claim data provided by the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business information and Management was used for period 1990-1997 to analyze all workers' compensation injury claims due to vehicular accidents. The use of claim data has several advantages, including the following: important demographic information , such as age and gender, can be analyzed; additional data of interest such as time of accident, day of week of accident, and event causing accident are available; and other relevant facts, such a nature of injury, part of body injured, disability time and medical costs can be assessed.
