STANDARDS SPELL PROGRESS FOR PROCUREMENT

Efforts by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) towards developing transit standards have had a beneficial impact on procurement by increasing cost efficiency and promoting better quality in products. By establishing a minimum and common standard for products used in transit systems, product suppliers are able to keep costs down which then translates to more procurements. Even with the adoption of standards, however, the challenge remains in their application. Concerns over product differentiation among supplies and protecting proprietary information are still seen as issues. With more than 175 unique transit standards to its credit, APTA has declared itself as an official Standards Development Organization (SDO) with the intent of adding further credibility and purpose to the program.
