TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN THAILAND
This paper presents an overview of traffic accident patterns in Thailand. It looks at traffic accident trends from a historical perspective, noting that during periods of economic crisis, accident rates have fallen, while under periods of economic recovery, higher fuel consumption has led to an increase in accidents. The study also relates that motorcycles were found to be the most accident-prone mode of transportation in the country. With motorcycles being the most affordable form of transportation among low income and young drivers, they totaled 67.6% of the total number of registered vehicles in Thailand in 2002. The study offers a number of measures directed at minimizing motorcycle accidents, such as encouraging helmet usage, providing proper training to motorcyclists, and lower the legal blood alcohol limit for motorcyclists.
