EAST TO NEW EUROPE
The rapid addition of service into central and eastern Europe due to the creation and expansion of the European Union (EU) has increased Austrian Airlines' capacity 34 percent in 2003 and passengers carried by 23.5 percent. Serving Sofia, Riga, Kiev and other eastern locales is the only way for Austrian Airlines to survive without shrinking. The article describes the state of Austrian's routes and its past, which is rooted in ferrying people over the Iron Curtain. Statistics for Austrian Airlines' aircraft fleet and total passenger volumes are listed. The article looks at competition from the Swiss, while several graphics detail revenue by geographic segment. A final section addresses Austrian Airlines' Focus East pan-European business plan to rival the France/KLM marriage and Lufthansa.
