THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

This article looks at the ties that profitable regional airlines have to highly unprofitable US network carriers. The article provides statistics on both regional and network carrier earnings. A fact file addresses pre-September 11 and current seat limits, as well as the maximum allowable number of regional jets for American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US Airways. The article relates that many in the industry feel that these maximums are harmful to growth, and ways to revise them are suggested. Included as well is a section listing companies acquiring new jets or adding lines.
