SELECTING A SPREADER : THE WEAPONS, AMMUNITION, AND KNOW-HOW TO FIGHT THE WAR ON ICE

This article describes characteristics of different kinds of spreaders as well as six basic ingredients of deicers and how they work. There are two different types, drop and rotary. The drop type limits application to the width of the spreader, so they are best suited to narrower surfaces. Rotary spreaders have a controlled opening that drops material onto a spinner, which sends it laterally in all directions. The rate of spreading is controlled by the speed of the spinner and the speed of the vehicle that is carrying it. While walk-behind spreaders are always needed, the most common type is a larger tailgate or v-box spreader. The former attaches to the back of a truck or single-utility vehicle tailgate, which keeps it from interfering with the payload. The box spreader uses the entire truck bed but can carry much more material. A new development is the production of spreaders made entirely of polyethylene, which has advantages over traditional steel designs because it is non-corrosive. Also they weigh less, which means they can be removed and installed over the course of the season depending on need.
