ATS Set to Roll Out Across NYCT Network

The article reviews the radical upgrade expected to roll out across the whole New York City complex subway system within two years. The current aging relay based train control system will be replaced by Siemens' new Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) system that is specifically designed to provide more effective service management for operating divisions, allowing improved performance and more regular headways. Additional benefits include provision of real time passenger information, centralization of maintenance management and, in the event of an emergency, improved coordination between New York City Transit (NYCT) and fire and police services. Interaction with non-ATS systems, such as NYCT's car mileage recording, scheduling, crew management, and Scada, is integral to the system, as is the ability to replay and simulate incidents, which is useful for investigations into events such as accidents.
