Ancient and Modern: Linking to Dubai's new Island
The landscape of Dubai is undergoing a massive expansion with the creation of what will be the largest man made island in the world. Palm Island will contain a central village, seventeen 'fronds' housing residential waterfront properties, and an outer barrier circle for hotels and apartment buildings. The island will be connected to the mainland by a single bridge which is now under construction. An international design competition was held in 2002, and the challenge fir the designers was to create a bridge worthy of its setting. The significant development in the design of the bridge came from the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, with the architectural elements atop each of the seven piers became an ideal home for cast stone representations of the Seven Wonders which can be seen briefly by passing drivers, or enjoyed up close from the bridge walkway. Pedestrians are protected from traffic by a special architectural barrier containing plantings and cast stone lantern bowls.
