Improving Environmental Performance: Developing an Environmental Management System
The article examines the options available for commercial vessel owner/ operators to improve environmental performance throughout their organization and establishing an effective environmental compliance program (ECP). The ECP may include an environmental management system (EMS) that becomes essential to the organization's day to day operations. The use of an EMS that documents corporate policies and procedures, the use of outside consultants to assess performance, the implementation of non-regulatory practices, and other efforts may go a long way to ensure effective compliance with existing domestic and international environmental practices.
