What Does the Future Hold?
This article provides an overview of real-time driver information (RTDI), including how it is used and what the future may hold. RTDI can be used for improving safety, improving route choice and timing, reducing delay, maintaining personal contact, advertising and infotainment. Although much of the current focus has been on hardware development for RTDI, the future should show more emphasis on the use of software for information analysis and filtering, and for interactive feeds. Future developments are likely to include event forecasting; automatic response (e.g., driver alert on signs of drowsiness, automatic speed reduction in ice road conditions); mobile-phone based integrated messaging/information systems with voice input/output; and Internet-based geographic information system mapping of incidents and alternative routes.
