DATA SOURCES TO SUPPORT THE NHTSA DEFECTS INVESTIGATION SYSTEM
The present sources of information used by the Office of Defects Information at NHTSA are reviewed, and consideration is given to new sources as well as enhancement of some of the present ones. New sources of information studied include the NHTSA Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS), court records, fire department records, a newspaper clipping service, and in-depth accident investigation reports. Analytical methods for processing both the present ODI files, and for the suggested new data sources, are presented. The accuracy and completeness of the data from the several sources are discussed, and an inventory model of the defect identification and recall process is presented.
