Comeback for Whisper Concrete?
This article discusses some recent innovations in concrete pavement technology. Although high performance concrete (HPC) has been in use for over a decade, there are some new objectives for the performance of HPC pavements. These new objectives include an increase in pavement system service life, a decrease in construction time, longer life cycles and lower maintenance costs. Another interesting focus of concrete research and development is the development of concrete pavements with reduced tire/pavement noise generating characteristics. Exposed aggregate concrete, also known as whisper concrete, is being used in European countries. When the proper application technique and the proper materials are used, whisper concrete can reduce noise, extend service life and offers a fully recyclable concrete structure. Ultra thin whitetopping (UTW) is a promising technique for fixing failing pavements. UTW is a thin layer of concrete placed over traditionally milled asphalt. UTW has been used extensively in the United States and several trials are underway in Europe.
