Material transfer vehicles (MTVs) were developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s to improve mat smoothness and end stop-and-go paving. This article describes how MTVs work and how they have evolved during their short history. The use of MTVs helps establish a continuous paving process that allows the paving train's speed to be decreased while increasing productivity. MTVs have a large hopper that allows for quicker and more efficient truck exchanges. In the mid 1990s, MTV manufacturers began equipping their transfer vehicles with remixing systems to reduce problems caused by material segregation and temperature differentials.
