Pedestrian Behavior at Bottlenecks

Insight into the behavior of pedestrians, and tools to predict this behavior, are essential in the planning and design of public pedestrian facilities. This article described new and important experimental findings of pedestrian flow theory, in particular pertaining to behavior of pedestrians and characteristics of pedestrian flows in the case of bottlenecks. First, a brief state of the art overview is presented; the experimental design is then discussed; an insight into the relations between pedestrian behavior and the macroscopic characteristics of the pedestrian flow is provided. Also provided is an overview of the various phenomena that have been observed from the bottleneck experiments. FInally, the article successfully estimates composite headway models, differentiating between free and constrained headways, and discusses the implication of the findings to bottleneck capacity analysis
