The End of an Era for Chicago's Meigs Field

Northerly Island in Chicago was once the site of Meigs Field, a 76-acre general aviation airport. The airport was closed in 2003 and the Chicago Park District has plans for a nature preserve on the site. Still in its early stages, the new park has been planted with prairie flowers, grasses and saplings. No money has been budgeted for the nature preserve and no completed plans have been released. Although the Park District has completed a series of community meetings designed to gather input on what should be done with Northerly Island, these meeting have tended to become forums for airport enthusiasts promoting their idea of a combination park and airport. In early February 2005, plans were announced to build a temporary concert pavilion on Northerly Island to raise funds for a permanent park, but this plan has faced opposition. Negotiations between the concert promoter and the park district are still underway.
