Show Me: Urban Transit Service, Community Transportation-Style
Among Missouri’s many fine community and public transportation operations, JEFFTRAN, in the state capital of Jefferson City, stands out as an operation in transition. In recent years, the city’s population has steadily risen and the transit system has grown in order to match the demand. A rural system has become an urban one. The system began as a shuttle system for state employees headed to downtown office buildings and their state penitentiary. Economic development has scattered factories and retail around the area and employment and shopping destinations are spread out. In short, Jefferson City is undergoing the type of change seen in many communities, and this article describes how JEFFTRAN is transitioning in order to meet the city’s new mobility challenges.
