GETTING SCHOOLED IN BLASTING AND PAINTING: WHERE TO FIND TRAINING IN THE U.S.

This article considers a wide sampling of training programs available to blasters and applicators. The authors note that sophisticated surface preparation methods, coating systems, and application techniques, as well as regulations to protect workers and the environment, have combined to create a setting where more formalized training is appropriate. The authors outline the opportunities available at specific training programs, including: the SSPC/NACE applicator qualification program; the SSPC certification/qualification programs for abrasive blasting and plural-component spraying; the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades (IUPAT) training courses; Williamson Free School's post-secondary program (Media, PA); and training programs offered by equipment suppliers, including spray finishing technology, surface preparation courses, shot peening training, and safety. One sidebar summarizes some of the applicator training schemes used in Europe (including Norway, France, Finland, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom).
