PRECAST BRIDGE ERECTED IN ONLY EIGHT DAYS
This case study article describes the construction of a precast concrete bridge in Epping, New Hampshire, in only eight days. The authors discusses the design work done by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT), noting that their approach can minimize construction-related traffic delays, improve work zone safety, and create a durable bridge with a long life span. The new 115-foot, single-span bridge replaced two existing spans over the Lamprey River. The bridge features a precast concrete, butted box-beam superstructure, and a precast concrete substructure. The author describes the design and construction of the bridge, including scheduling considerations, erection of the precast components, and cost factors. The article concludes with a discussion of how precast concrete substructure components to be substituted for cast-in-place pieces in design approaches.
