ADAPTABLE SIGNALLING WILL SPEED V/LINE UP TO 160 KM/H
This article describes the redevelopment of regional passenger railways in the state of Victoria, Australia, including the signal systems employed. The current maximum line speed is 130 km/h, but the track and signalling upgrade will enable 160 km/h running from 2006. New diesel trains have been added to the rolling stock. The contracts for the upgrade were awarded to two consortia for two lines each. One line needed extensive restructuring to bring it to high performance standard. The choice of signalling was left to the contractor which encouraged flexibility and innovation. Some track is bi-directionally signalled to suit local situations. Optic fibre cable has been used as the basis for communications requirements including the Wide Area Network through each route. All signals and warning lights are the light-emitting diode type. Old relay interlocking and mechanical signalling is being replaced and level crossings are being upgraded. The Train Protection and Warning System is being installed to increase train safety if signals are passed at red.
