BALLASTED TRACK SYSTEMS FOR HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC
This article reviews a selection of railway track sleepers for use in ballasted track in Germany, comparing their effects on ballast and subsoil under the influence of train velocity and axle load. The sleeper designs B 70, B 01, B 75, B 90, and B 320 are described in terms of their geometry, weight and rail fastenings. Train loads and vibrations produce destructive effects on ballast, further affected by the elasticity of the rail fastenings and stiffness of the rail. Rail fastenings have been modified in development for high speed rail traffic. Comparative testing has assessed the sleeper types with respect to elastic length, force on the rail seat area, and resulting bearing stress on the ballast. On the basis of these values it is possible to compare damage to ballast and strain in the subgrade. Calculations support the conclusion that sleepers B 75 and B 320 apply the least stress and are the most effective applications for high speed lines.
