KEEPING TRACK OF TYRES
Tyre manufacturers are increasingly looking to promote tyre management packages to bus and coach operators. Michelin has an electronic management system called SmartFleet, which was developed in conjunction with Smartronics and uses Radio Frequency Identification technology. Each vehicle is fitted with a radio frequency data tag that records its identity, details of the tyres fitted to it and a copy of the last inspection. Each tyre is also tagged. Bridgestone/Firestone has developed an internet-based Fleet Chief package. Both systems use a handheld unit to record tyre data during checks. Comfort, low noise and reliability are virtues claimed by Continental for its latest HSR1 coach tyre. Tyre manufacturers are promoting the advantages of fitting single rather than paired tyres to the drive axles of buses. Alloy wheels, such as those produced by Alcoa, are gaining in popularity for coaches.
