RAILHEAD REPAIR BY GAS METAL ARC ROBOTIC SLOT WELDING: AN EVALUATION OF NEWLY-DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGY

This article reports on a new technology that has been developed for railhead repairs. While thermite welds and flash-butt welds have been the traditional method for providing a suitable joint through the cross section of a rail, their mechanical performance has not matched that of the parent rail. An alternative repair weld, known as robotic gas metal arc welding (GMAW), can repair railhead defects to a maximum depth of 0.75 inches, without cutting all the way through the rail. With this technique, the web and base of the rail are not modified, since the weld extends only through the head of the rail in which the defect is present. The article gives an overview of the slot welding process, It then describes how the three different welds were tested for the following parameters: rolling load, slow bend, Charpy impact, tensile, longitudinal and transverse hardness testing, micro and macro examination and radiography and ultrasonic testing.
