EXPECT COOLER TEMPERATURES : ONGOING RESEARCH AT NCAT IS PROVING WARM-MIX ASPHALT IS A CLEAR AND ONGOING OPTION IN THE U.S.
This is article looks at the development and use of warm-mix asphalt in Europe and its possible importation to America. It begins with the standard temperature and application process for hot mix asphalt (HMA) in America a decade ago, including slight variations to the process. The article then explains how leaders of the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) initiated a study of European methods for lower temperature production, including visits to German plants, paving sites, and completed roads in Germany and Norway. The three processes evaluated by NAPA in Europe are described, noting that each process serves to reduce the necessary compaction temperature that is required for achieving the required in-place density. The article notes that this temperature reduction, in theory, should cause no reduction in the quality of the resulting HMA. Foamed asphalt, wax, and asphalt binders are involved in the three processes. The article gives a detailed description of each application method, including materials composition, mix dynamics and application. Lastly, the article looks at the possibility of the new techniques coming to America, including local testing and pilot runs.
