HOW 'SMART PARKING' CAN HELP TO EASE TRAFFIC CONGESTION
This article examines a new smart parking pilot project aimed at thinning highway congestion and increasing transit usage on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system The project was located at the Rockridge BART station off of California Highway 24 and uses flashing road signs to display real time information on available parking spaces. The system allows people to reserve spaces or track space availability by Internet, phone, cell phone and PDA. According to the projects principal investigator, BART intends to expand the program to other stations. The article lists funding sources such as the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and details the technology used to gather the real-time information.
