SUSTAINABLE AIR TRANSPORT - ON TRACK IN 2050

The aim of this paper is to outline three consistent 'Images' of sustainable air travel in 2050, in order to widen the perspective regarding possible air transport futures and indicate the magnitude of changes necessary to reach acceptable emission of greenhouse gases. A particular aim is to explore the environmental potential of using aircraft designed for lower speeds. All scheduled and nonscheduled passenger aircraft worldwide is considered, but not general aviation and military air movements. The method used is backcasting, and the steps in the backcasting approach are: identification of problems and setting of targets; outlining of future Images in which society meets the targets; and, analysis of paths from the present to the future Images.
