LONG LINES NOT SO PRACTICAL IN CHINA WHILE SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZED LINES FAVORED

This article explores the practical application of new magnetic levitation (maglev) railroads in China. The authors consider cultural, social and economic factors as they discuss the implementation of urban and rural mass transit strategies for China. Topics covered include experiments with maglev railroads in China, the prospects for maglev railroad construction of different sizes (scale) in China, and specific considerations in each of three different super-metropolis areas: the Zhujiang River Delta, the "Grand Beijing" area, and the Yangtze River Delta. The authors conclude that considering investment, technological maturity, and China's current regional economic development and urbanization, it is more practical to construct maglev railroad on a smaller or medium-size scale.
