High Capacity Micropiles for Utility Retrofit: A Case History at D.E. Karn Power Plant in Bay City, Michigan

The case history involves a major retrofit of the D. E. Karn power plant at the Consumers Energy’s Karn/Weadock Generating Facility near Bay City, Michigan to meet current environmental requirements. The retrofit required the installation of heavily loaded columns above and between existing equipment, overhead piping, underground utilities and various structures without disruption to the operation of the plant. High capacity micropiles were proposed as the most practical alternative to meet the project budget and schedule requirements. Micropiles with a single high-strength steel bar and permanent upper steel casing (Type A) were installed in groups and extended into competent sandstone. An instrumented load test of a micropile was performed to determine the stress distribution in the rock socket and verify the design requirements. A total of 112 micropiles were installed in time for the steel erection to keep the project on schedule.
