This chapter is one of three on moving people, goods, and information in Singapore, all of which appear in a book on moving people, goods, and information in the 21st century. In this chapter, the author focuses on the sea; the other chapters cover roads and rails, and intelligent corridors. The author of this chapter examines the development of the Port of Singapore in the context of how the movement of people and goods through the sea-lane has change dramatically. The author also discusses how the advent of the information age has changed the entire landscape of competition in this vital industry. Developments in the last decade are examined in detail because those developments provide vital clues about how new infrastructures are being developed to meet future challenges. The author concludes that Singapore's integrated port infrastructure which uses a hub-and-spoke system, is one answer to the challenges presented by a global economy. However, a hub-and-spoke system, in order to be efficient, must have quick turnaround, highly automated operations, and an integrated information system. And in Singapore, because of its geography, all of this must be accomplished in a highly confined spaced. Integrating port design into the country's overall master plan has helped Singapore create infrastructures that are efficient, cutting-edge, and competitive in a global market.
