COMBINING URBAN INFRASTRUCTURES OF MOVEMENT: A VISION OF SUSTAINABILITY. IN: MOVING PEOPLE, GOODS, AND INFORMATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY: THE CUTTING-EDGE INFRASTRUCTURES OF NETWORKED CITIES

This chapter on sustainability and combining urban infrastructures of movement is from a book on moving people, goods, and information in the 21st century. The author defines infrasystems as urban infrastructure systems that are composed of large technical networks designed to distribute and deliver specialized services, materials, and assets to households, companies, and other organizations. The author notes that the infrasystems that have helped the development and contributed to environmental problems have also helped distance consumers from the consequences of their actions because the systems are of such large scale. The author then offers a brief survey of a number of synergies that can help to change infrasystems to a more sustainable direction. The author focuses on coordination of different systems and interaction among the technical components of different systems, as well as on two innovative transport system solutions. The first example, dual-mode systems for personal transport, represents a combination of different infrasystem technologies. The second example, transport of goods through home delivery based on e-commerce, includes all mentioned synergy categories. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the conditions of introduction, or change, of infrasystems, with a special focus on transport systems.
