REACH FOR THE SKY: THE ADVANTAGE OF ADVANTIS

The ADVANTIS project was set up to exploit the service quality guarantee that EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) and the Galileo satellite programme will provide and offer liability-critical and non-critical applications through the same equipment, focusing on road transport applications. This paves the way for automatic tolling, speed limit enforcement, and monitoring hazardous cargo transportation. The advantages of ADVANTIS are illustrated for automatic tolling. Details are given of the ADVANTIS system. A table is given of road user requirements where satellite technology can provide added value on existing services in rural and urban areas: private passenger transport, public transport, freight transport and road authorities and transport operators.
