CALTRANS MOVES HEAVEN AND EARTH (AND 16,650 CUBIC YARDS OF CONRETE) IN 'RAPID REHAB' OF INTERSTATE 15
A Rapid Rehab approach used by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 8 enabled the agency to use an accelerated schedule for replacing aging concrete slabs on an interstate highway while keeping the disruption to daily commuters and weekend travelers to a minimum. The approach involved a condensed work schedule which called for working around the clock, through weekends as well as daytime hours. A quick-change moveable barrier system was used to accommodate peak directional traffic. Variable message signs displaying current travel times or expected delays were used to keep drivers informed. Travelers were encouraged to divert discretionary travel during peak commute hours. In addition, Caltrans partnered with a local transit agency to provide additional free commuter bus service during construction periods. The Rapid Rehab approach ultimately allowed Caltrans to perform its work in one month rather than what would have normally taken eight months to complete.
