WORKIN' ON THE RAILROAD : AMTRAK OAKLAND MAINTENANCE YARD

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) annually makes available to Amtrak around $200 million for capital improvements and operations of several of its rail lines, such as the Capitols, San Joaquins, and Pacific Surlfiners. This article describes how Caltrans invested $38 million in the development of a state-of-the-art maintenance facility for Amtraks West Coast passenger equipment. The $65 million facility, dedicated specifically for only Amtraks use, is located in a rail yard adjacent to Interstate 880 in West Oakland. In addition to providing improved storage and control, the maintenance yard will allow for the inspection and servicing of a full train set, as well as it locomotives. While the facility will improve efficiency and reliability in passenger service for Amtrak, it is also expected to provide a boost to the economy in a area that has been fighting urban decay.
