SILVER SERVICE: A NEW SERFICE FOR AN OLD MASTER
The article reviews the ongoing program of maintenance on the 40-year old Silver Jubilee Bridge that carries the A533 over the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal. The bridge also links the towns of Runcorn and Widnes, and because it is the only river crossing in a 20 km stretch, the bridge carries approximately 90,000 vehicles a day, a figure that exceeds its design capacity by about 50%. The coating proposed and used was Sterling Lloyd's Eliminator two-component, liquid spray applied waterproofing system, based on methyl methacrylate resins, in conjunction with the company's high performance Bond Coat. With traffic congestion and no convenient alternative route available, the work had to be done overnight. Despite the tight schedule and varying application windows, the rapid cure and speed of application of materials, meants that Stirling Looud Contracts was able to have the lane treated returned to service for the Monday morning rush hour.
